Location: Situated adjacent to the Loisaba Wilderness’ 60,000 acre private wildlife conservancy, on the edge of the Laikipia plateau, on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro river.

Description: A unique and delightful concept of sleeping under the stars in extreme comfort and enjoying a truly cultural experience. The Koija Starbeds, constructed from eco friendly wood and thatch, are cantilevered over the flowing river and accessed by a footbridge from the opposite bank.

Accommodation/Facilities: The word ‘unique’ is an understatement to describe the Koija accommodation facilities. One twin and two double platforms have four-poster beds that can be wheeled out onto the deck for a night under the stars. Each platform has an en-suite bathroom with a large camp-style shower.

Hosted By: The Starbeds are part of an exciting new joint venture between Loisaba and the Koija community. Hosted by the Koija community Mukogodo Maasai warriors.

Activities:

  • Walks with Samburu and Mukogodo Maasai warriors.
  • Horse and camel riding, and mountain biking.
  • Day and night game drives in customised open-top vehicles.
  • Bush breakfast, lunch, dinner and sundowners.
  • River rafting on the Ewaso Nyiro river (seasonal).
  • Cultural visits to Samburu and Mukogodo Maasai villages.
  • Fishing on the river and dams.
  • Bird watching – over 250 species recorded.

Closed Season: Mid April to end of May.

Access: By daily schedule flight from Wilson Airport (Nairobi) to Nanyuki, followed by private charter flight direct to the Loisaba airstrip, or by road from Nanyuki (2½ hours). The Starbeds are accessed by foot, camel, horse or vehicle from Loisaba Wilderness.
