RIDING WILD

Introduction: One of the best ways to explore Borana Ranch and the surrounding area is on horseback with Riding Wild. Borana has 20 horses trained to take guests on fun, forward going, yet relaxing rides. Riding Wild’s main priorities are rider safety and horse welfare. The horses are a mixture of Somali, Ethiopian, Arab and thoroughbred - agile and strong breeds that can cope with the climate and terrain. Riding Wild offers a unique nature experience in fantastic riding country.

Location: Borana Ranch lies at the foot of Mount Kenya, 6500 feet above sea level. Its unique geographical situation makes the 35,000 acre ranch a haven for a great diversity of wildlife including lion, elephant, giraffe, buffalo and leopard. The ranch is also home to over 50 indigenous tree families, 300 species of bird, supplemented throughout the year by a multitude of migratory visitors.

Activities: Fly camping, bush breakfasts, riding and wildlife and bird viewing.

Bush Breakfasts: Based at the luxurious Borana Lodge, guests rise early and head out for a 4-6 hour ride, enjoying breathtaking views, exploring the plains of Borana and winding through dense valleys. The ride stops for a delicious breakfast at a beautiful location out in the bush.
Fly-camps: These are 1-2 night safaris where fly-camps are set up in ideal spots allowing guests to really submerge themselves in the sounds and sights of the African bush. Comfortable tents, showers and a delicious 3 course meals provide comfort after a long days riding.
Horse-back safaris: 5 to 7 (or more) day safaris for a minimum of 4 people - a real bush adventure! Guests have time to get know their horses and venture further a field to neighbouring ranches, where different wildlife species such as rhino and hippo are found, and new spectacular views and terrain range from dry savannah to lush montane forest.

Accommodation/Facilities: Ol Gaboli Community Lodge: Situated on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, ideal for groups and families. Five large bandas can accommodate families (25 people in total) and student groups (up to 50 people). Other accommodation provided can be lodge or camp based - from community lodges to fly camps in remote areas. Our camps are comfortable and are a great base to explore the wonderful outdoor attractions of Laikipia.

Hosted by: Rides are hosted by Jake Rendle-Worthington, a horse training expert with an MSc in Animal Behaviour and experience of guiding in Southern and Eastern Africa. Heading up a team of well-trained local grooms with indigenous knowledge, Jake's priority is to ensure a comfortable and memorable stay. In Camp support staff ensure that guests are safe and comfortable, whilst sharing their knowledge of the flora and fauna.

Seasons: Closed in November.

Access: By daily schedule flight from Wilson Airport (Nairobi) to Lewa Downs, by private charter flight direct to the Borana airstrip, or by road from either Nanyuki (2 hours) or Nairobi.
