Responsible Tourism: 10 points of committment - active contribution towards conservation.
In ensuring the remarkable integrity of the Laikipia ecosystem, the LWF has been instrumental in demonstrating that wildlife can be the most economically viable and sustainable land-use option in drylands - ecotourism. LWF has played a pivotal role in the development of world class community-owned tourism projects such as Il N'gwesi, Tassia, Ol Gaboli, Koija and The Sanctuary at Ol Lentille, and actively markets Laikipia internationally on behalf of such ecotourism ventures.
There are over 40 tourism operators in Laikipia, all of which are members of the Forum. With support from the Tourism Trust Fund (TTF; European Union and Kenya Government joint initiative), LWF continues to put great effort into promoting Laikipia as a unique and high quality tourism destination for the benefit of all Laikipia tourism operations and the people of Laikipia. The value of Laikipia’s tourism industry is being generated by Kenyans for Kenyan.
This 3 year tourism development, destination marketing and branding plan for Laikipia – now in the final year - has made considerable progress in enhancing the value and impact of Laikipia’s tourism industry, ensuring that Laikipia is on the map in so significant a way that it rivals the Mara in the eyes of the world. Given the exclusive nature and outstanding quality of Laikipia lodges, the remarkable integrity of the ecosystem with its immense wildlife populations, and the fact that the plateau is home to more endangered species than anywhere else in East Africa, the LWF is convinced that Laikipia will increasingly be seen as Kenya's foremost destination.
The tourism sector has undoubtedly the greatest long term interest in seeing the success of the Forum's work towards the maintenance of the integrity of the Laikipia ecosystem. In turn, the LWF recognises that tourism holds the greatest potential for development of a sustainable funding base, and a long term future for the Forum's pioneering community conservation and wildlife management programmes.Full listing & further details of each tourism operator
