Thoughts for the Wildlife Conservation Strategy Meeting

The following is draft objective 1 of the Laikipia Wildlife Conservation strategy: Promote appropriate land use that reverses land degradation and enables humans to live with and benefit from wildlife.

A member asks the following: What is the size and density distribution of the human population in Laikipia, which is compatible with a Rangeland, Livestock and Wildlife Conservation Strategy? The subject of population growth is no longer taboo, but of concern to the Ministry of Planning (if that is their correct title).

Why the Pastoralist Community & Others Should Go Beyond the Hurdles

For centuries pastoralist communities have kept a connection between God and nature and the supremacy of the environment (soil, plants, and all animals). They revered each of their functions and their interdependency. These beliefs are echoed by Allan Savory, founder of the Holistic Management approach in his understanding of nature and its perfect working balance, when he says ‘individual parts do not exist in nature, only wholes and these form and shape each other’. Our elders also envisioned and focused on the power invested in mankind to manage an upright way of living with each other in all facets of life, both in times of joy and through hardship.

Wildlife decline in the Mara?

I am interested to read the recent article from the Journal of Zoology on the decline of Wildlife species in the Masai Mara claiming that the Mara has lost more than two thirds of its wildlife.

As an empirical safari guide, game monitor and spectator of the mara ecosystem mainly from the back of a horse for up to 100 days a year for the last 27 yrs, I should love to know where Dr Joseph Ogutu gets his statistics from.
