January 2008 E-News

To all Members, Friends and Supporters of the Laikipia Wildlife Forum

Our thoughts go out to all Kenyans affected by the current unrest in the country, and we hope for a quick end to the crisis.  Like many other organisations, LWF’s work has been affected by the situation, however most activities are ongoing.

Thank You

LWF would like to thank Nicky Dyer for once again putting together the LWF January newsletter.  Members will receive their copy by post shortly, and additional copies will be available from the LWF office.

Tourism

On 23rd January, Kenya Tourism Federation called together stakeholders to discuss a way forward for recovery of Kenya’s tourism industry following the post-election clashes.  The meeting was well attended by industry stakeholders, as well as executive members of key national tourism bodies, including KTB, KATO, KAHC, as well as the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, and KWS Director.

Wildlife management

A total of 26kms of the West Laikipia Elephant Fence has been powered and construction in 2 areas is ongoing (from Finafran Ranch towards Lombala Farm, and from Ex Eroc side towards ADC Mutara).  One energizer house has been built and a further two still to be completed.

Community Conservation

LWF, NRT (Northern Ranglands Trust) and AWF (African Wildlife Foundation) have held a series of meetings to develop a concept for conservation security in Naibunga Conservancy.

Anthony (LWF ED) participated in an NRT livestock project workshop, to review the progress after one year of linking livestock markets to wildlife conservation goals.

Josephat (LWF CCPM) attended a stakeholders meeting to brainstorm the various aspects of rangeland rehabilitation in Laikipia district.  As a result, the LWF’s ‘Livestock and Rangelands’ sub-committee is being revived, to allow for information exchange and collaboration.

David Masere (LWF Eastern CLO) is supporting the Borana Education Support Programme, where they are introducing a ‘cooking to conserve’ programme.  Initial progress has been made on building and installing conservation cookers, which use very little firewood, into 4 schools in Eastern unit.

Virginia (North Western CLO) is back on her feet again after an encounter with thugs in the Luoniek area last month.  She and Jospehat held several meetings with the area chief and the elders who reassured her of her personal security.

Environmental Education

Education field trips for school groups conducted through the LWF’s Environmental Education Programme have been cancelled this month, due to the late start of term and other educational priorities being addressed, following post election clashes.

Ephantus (LWF Environmental Education Officer) met with the Laikipia West District Education Officer (DEO) in Nyahururu to discuss the LWF’s Environmental Education Programme (EEP) and identify ways to work closely together in the future.  The DEO pledged one officer to assist in the coordination of school trips in Laikipia West.
