December 2007 E-News

LWF wishes all members, friends and supporters a very happy Christmas.

The LWF office will be closed from 24th December until 2nd January 2008 – sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Please accept our apologies for the LWF’s phone (062 31600) which has been out of service for a month.  We now have a new wireless number:  020 2166626, and our mobile remains as:  0726 500260.

Tourism

Ol Gaboli Banda 6 was officially opened on 29th November by Erna Kerst, Director USAID Kenya.  USAID’s FORREMS initiative co-financed the construction in partnership with the Il Motiok Group Ranch community and Women’s Group, Mpala Ranch, Rift Valley Adventures and LWF.  Banda 6 is a complimentary entity to the Ol Gaboli Bandas of the Il Motiok Women’s Group which was developed in 2006 with support from the European Union.

Invited by African Wildlife Foundation, LWF attended the official dedication of The Sanctuary at Ol Lentille.  The occasion was also attended by USAID Director Erna Kerst, Tourism Trust Fund (TTF) Chief Executive Dr. Dan Kagagi, the Permanent Secretary for Environment Prof. James Ole Kiyapi, and Director of KWS Mr. Julius Kipngetich.

LWF has appointed Chris Thouless and his marketing team to develop a 5 year tourism development strategy for Laikipia Wildlife Forum.

LWF was pleased to welcome the TTF Project Advisory Committee to the LWF office and Laikipia Information Centre.  Anthony (Executive Director) gave a well-received presentation on the work of LWF and its tourism programme.

Wildlife management

Fence construction of the West Laikipia Elephant Fence is underway, and a wildlife drive to the wildlife-tolerant side of the fence is anticipated to take place in mid January with support from KWS and Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

Community Conservation

Anthony, on behalf of LWF, has been invited to join the Ministry of Environment task force to develop the national policy for sustainable natural resource management.

LWF and SNV have signed a partnership agreement where SNV will provide capacity building support to the community groups that LWF is working with in the water sector and community nature based-enterprise development.

Josephat (Community Conservation Programme Manager) attended a 2-week project planning and management course in Arusha, together with 41 other participants from 8 countries.  The course focused on planning, implementation and management of projects using real life case studies.

With support from Safaricom Foundation to help develop and strengthen 4 River Water User Associations within Laikipia, members of rivers Rongai, Ngobit, Ewaso Nyiro East and Mutara benefited from a 2-day workshop on the development of constitutions and by-laws for each river.  The process is being coordinated by Nteere (LWF Central unit CLO), and consensus for the drafted by-laws will be concluded in January.

Following the recent ILMAMUSI Forest Association AGM where fresh election were conducted and a new chairman Mr. George Rambei appointed, the LWF facilitated a visit of 30 ILMAMUSI members to Rumuruti Forest Association to share ideas and establish a way forward.

Prior to the launch of Ol Gaboli Banda 6, Anthony had the opportunity to show the USAID team the Makurian rangeland rehabilitation site where holistic management is being tested.

Environmental Education

LWF is grateful to Maggie Esson & Chester Zoo for their ongoing support to the LWF’s Environmental Education Programme (EEP).  Maggie spent 2 weeks with LWF last month, and a 3 year partnership is being drawn up to further develop and strengthening the LWF’s Environmental Education Programme.

In November, the EEP guided 116 primary school children from 4 schools to Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
