Application deadline for the position of Community Liaison Officer for North Western unit has been extended until 1st November: contact: director@laikipia.org

Tourism

The LWF team joined over 300 community members at Twala Cultural Manyatta (Il Polei group ranch) on 28th September to celebrate World Tourism Day, where the 2007 theme was 'Tourism Opens Doors for Women' with the focus being gender equity and women empowerment.  The occasion, also attended by the area District Officer Mukogodo, gave the 13 different groups an opportunity to display their beaded crafts and share ideas.  John Elias, the new unit Director for Uaso Nyiro also attended the event.

Following further visits to campsites within Naibunga Conservancy, a 2nd edition of Wild Camping in Laikipia has been produced and will be distributed by LWF at the Nairobi Get-a-Way travel show in early November.

LWF placed a Laikipia advert in the Ecotourism Kenya Green Directory (2007 - 2008), with the message ‘Laikipia – where tourism is creating space for wildlife’. The directory contains information on Ecotourism members, eco-rated camps/lodges as well as information on green technologies and services.

Wildlife management

Following surveys of the West Laikipia Elephant fence by potential contractors, development of the initial 81km section from ADC Mutara/OPC boundary up to Ewaso Narok Swamp has been awarded to Agrotechno Resources Ltd, and work is anticipated to begin shortly, with supervision from KWS.

The Laikipia Predator Project film on predator conservation and livestock management produced last year and translated into Maa has been widely shown to over 220 communities in Eastern unit.

Community Development

With support from the Netherlands Embassy 5 new motorbikes for the LWF Community Liaison Officers have been acquired in replacement of the old bikes which are now up for sale.  Enquire through: info@laikipia.org

Anthony (LWF Executive Director) gave a presentation at the 2007 Ecotourism Conference at Panafric Hotel in Nairobi on "Dispersal areas: approaches to sustainable management", drawing on Laikipia’s experiences.

A contract has been awarded to Susie Wren Organic & Natural Product Advisor to carry out a study on bio-enterprise options in Laikipia, with the aim to assess the commercial potential for indigenous herbs, trees and plants.  Over the next 3 to 6 months a broad market analysis will be carried out and recommendations made on best sustainable economic use of identified plant products.

Supported by USAID FORREMS grant through LWF, groups from Naibunga Conservancy and Mukogodo Forest attended a 3 day honey symposium in Nanyuki organised by ENNDA in collaboration with the Ministry of Livestock and other stakeholders.  The intervention gave an opportunity for groups to share experiences, explore opportunities within the beekeeping sector, and initiate an integrated approach to production, processing and marketing of honey.

The Environmental Impact Assessment for Yaaku Cultural Manyatta has been approved by NEMA.  Final architectural designs are being done so development of this unique eco-tourism venture can begin, once permission from the Director of Kenya Forest Service is granted.

To enable long term monitoring of the ecological health of Mukogodo Forest, Delphine (LWF Technical Advisor), Gioche (Forest Officer Mukogodo) and Nicolas Kodei (ILMAMUSI head scout) are identifying eight 3-5km transects, which will have a series of indicators for monitoring.

Environmental Education

In September the LWF Environmental Education Programme guided 6 primary schools and 3 secondary schools (261 students and 18 teachers) for education tours to Laikipia Nature Conservancy, Ol Jogi Game Reserve and Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
