Stephanie Dolrenry of the Laikipia Predator Project is launching her PhD study of hyenas living in community areas of Laikipia, working closely with LWF Uaso Nyiro CLO Joseph Mosiany, and the people of Il Polei. The study looks at different ways to avoid livestock losses without resorting to poisoning hyenas.
LWF's funding proposal to Safaricom Foundation to help develop and strengthen 4 River Water User Associations within Laikipia has been approved and a grant agreement is being drawn up. The project aims to help members of rivers Rongai, Ngobit, Ewaso Nyiro East and Mutara to sustainably manage the rivers and catchment areas.
LWF finalised a joint proposal from BRUWA (Burguret River User Water Association) and Mt Kenya Biodiversity Conservation Group for consideration by CEF, with support from Nature Kenya and Pact Kenya. In an effort to promote the conservation and sustainable management of the Burguret river catchment area, the project aims to create a Conservation Resource Centre, an Environmental Education Programme targeting schools and communities, and water conservation equipment for small holders.

In support of the UNEP's Billion Tree Campaign, the North Western CLO mobilised 8 tree groups and one school group - a total of 300 people - to participate in a tree planting day held on the 18th April at Survey Primary School. 1000 seedlings were donated by Laikipia Nature Conservancy and the event was attended by Kuki Gallmann, Tree is Life, KFS and local administration.
The LWF assisted Lekurruki community to draft a memorandum of agreement for the lease of Tassia lodge by Northern Frontier Ventures, which is due to begin on the 1st May.
Mugie Ranch has hired 2 scouts and 1 extension officer to help improve relations with the neighbouring Pokot community, and to sensitise communities on the benefits of environmental and wildlife conservation. The LWF North Western CLO will help guide the team and involve them in the LWF's community conservation program ongoing in the unit.
Through their Public Private Community Partnership, Mugie Ranch has pledged 15% of all wildlife related income (gate fee) to 6 neighbouring community groups who are registered with the Ministry of Social Services and LWF. With support from the LWF CLO, initial funds are being used to help the groups re-establish their offices and committees, and Mugie is encouraging applications to fund nature based enterprises.
With FORREMS support, the LWF helped identify 120 farmers from 11 groups in Daiga location to join the TIST program, which aims to promote commercial woodlot establishment and to link owners with a carbon credit market.
The LWF CCPM visited FORREMS supported riparian reforestation programme on the banks of 3 rivers (Ontulili, Timau and Teleswan) where over 800 seedlings were planted early this year and assessed that over 85% have survived.
