Tourism

LWF hosted Mr. Roy Maposa of the TTF ACP monitoring mission, and was pleased to introduce Mr. Maposa and Francis Agoya of TTF to some of the LWF's tourism achievements during the first 2 years of the TTF supported Tourism Development Plan for Laikipia. LWF submitted a concept paper to Ford Foundation to seek additional support for the development of Yaaku Museum project on the edge of Mukogodo forest - an eco-tourism venture being developed with Kuri Kuri group ranch members.

With thanks to Penny Horsey, new 'Laikipia Wildlife Forever' bumper stickers are available at the LWF office.

Wildlife Management

A bill of quantities has been developed and material tenders awarded for a portion of the 163km Laikipia West Electric Fence project. KWS has funds available for materials for the first 50km, but labour costs are still to be secured.

Community Conservation

The LWF CCMP introduced Beatrice Wamalwa of USAID to several of the LWF's FORREMS supported activities within Laikipia. Over 3 days she visited the Daiga woodlots, indigenous tree projects on riparian riverbanks in Eastern unit, Ethi and Makurian hay-baling projects, Yaaku museum site, Laikipia Aloe Nursery and Rumuruti Women's Aloe Group.

LWF provided information to the District Planning team on their fact finding tour of Laikipia, to assist in the development of a 25 year 'District Regional Physical Development Plan' for Laikipia.

The LWF Technical Advisor conducted a short training with the LWF CLO's to refresh them on socio-economic methods for data collection.

During the Ewaso Conservation Group meeting held at Mpala Ranch on 15th March, it was agreed that a part-time secretariat should be hired to take the work-load from LWF. Terms of Reference are being developed for this position.

The LWF CCMP attended FORREMS FAT (Focal Area Team) meeting where discussions focused on the registration of ILMAMUSI as a Community Forest Association to enable the community to engage in Participatory Forest Management within Mukogodo forest.

Following the distribution of aloe seedlings to farmers in Rumuruti last October, the LWF supported the visit of Withare farmers to Laikipia Aloe Nursery and Rumuruti Women's Aloe project to gain an insight into aloe growing and product development.

In an effort to encourage community members in Eastern unit with large herds of cattle to de-stock, LWF has helped in selecting cattle to graze on Borana and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy to fatten for sale at good market prices. In February 77 cattle from Borana were sold to Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

With support from AWF, the Faso Nitro CLOD coordinated an exposure visit for members of Nkiloriti group ranch's grazing committee to Baringo, where they visited pasture management projects being implemented by Rehabilitation of Arid Environments (RAE Trust).

The Central CLO met with Mutara River Water Users Association where one of its members - Kiangoru water project - has raised funds to install water pipes in place of the furrow, which may be closed down.

Environmental Education:

In February, the LWF Environmental Education Programme guided 5 primary and 4 secondary schools on education tours to Ol Pejeta Conservancy (261 students and 18 teachers).
