KAPTUYA CONSERVANCY

Location: Little is known about the community-based conservation project in far-western Laikipia called Kaptuya Community Wildlife Conservancy, but it does hold real promise. An area of 20,000 acres located just 16kms off the main Suguta Mugie - Lake Baringo road near Churo, has been set aside by the Pokot community for conservation. Pokot are predominantly pastoralists, however conservation initiatives are being adopted with Kaptuya being the first of its kind in the area. The Conservancy overlooks the spectacular Mukutan Gorge - one of the most diverse non-forested areas in East Africa. It is blessed with views over Lake Baringo and the Great Rift Valley, and on clear days one can see Mt. Kenya, Mt. Elgon and Mt. Nyiro. The areas varied topography is home to over 400 species of birds and 800 plant species.

Description: Located on the top of a hill with 360 degree view is the Kaptuya community campsite. The rocky hill is covered with small trees and green shrubbery, including African Olive and Combretum. 6,200 feet above sea level, surrounded by steep valleys and undulating hills, this is paradise for birds of prey. Bordering the 100,000 acre Laikipia Nature Conservancy to the south east there are opportunities to see elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, Greater Kudu and wild dog that roam through the region.

Walking, hiking & biking: At its deepest, the sides of the Mukutan Gorge are 600 meters high, and for the adventurer, a hike down the gorge to the river is a 'must' - it takes about 3 hours down and is fairly rocky and steep in places. The experience is added to by stunning views, varied vegetation and possible encounters with wildlife. There is a rocky road to the bottom, so there is an option to arrange for your vehicle to meet you at the bottom (with a picnic) to avoid a further 5 hour hike back up. Kaptuya Conservancy offers visitors a fantastic base to explore the natural surroundings. Visitors must be accompanied by a local guide on all walks and hikes.

Cultural Interaction: The newly opened Churo Cultural Boma offers visitors an insight into the fascinating culture of Pokot people. Traditional artefacts including leather beadwork and painted gourds can be bought from the women.
