IL N'GWESI LODGE

Location: Il N’gwesi Lodge is situated adjacent to the Ngare Ndare River on the edge of the Mukogodo Hills and boasts commanding panoramic views across Northern Kenya.

Description: In 2002, Il N’gwesi set the pace for Laikipia’s ecotourism, being awarded the Equator Initiative Award at the World Summit in Johannesburg, and has become a role model for upcoming community eco-lodges in East Africa. This small piece of paradise, perched between peak and plain, possesses a magic which cannot fail to touch anyone who is lucky enough to experience it.

Accommodation/Facilities: Constructed from local material Il N’gwesi can accommodate up to sixteen people in six thatched, open-plan cottages, with adjoining open air showers, positioned to ensure both fantastic views and privacy. Il N’gwesi has a large sitting area, a striking swimming pool with an ideal lunch venue, and a covered viewing hide overlooking a waterhole.

Hosted By: The Il N’gwesi group ranch members, initially involved in the construction, now run and host the lodge.

Activities:

1. Exploring the magnificent conservation area that adjoins Lewa, Borana and the Mukogodo Forest Reserve.

2. Visits to the cultural boma.
3. Following the Ngare Ndare River with local guides, offers a special opportunity to get close to the wildlife, followed by a picnic breakfast.
4. Game drive, followed by sundowners on one the many different vantage points along the Mukogodo Hills.
5. Another very popular attraction is the hand-reared orphan black rhino, Omni. Moved to Il N’gwesi from Lewa, Omni is the first black rhino to come back to Il N’gwesi in 30 years.
   Visits to see the baboon troop and monkeys.

Optional Extras: Vehicle hire and cultural visits. Catering option available.

Closed Season: Open all year round.

Access: By daily schedule flight from Wilson Airport (Nairobi) to Lewa Downs followed by road transfer, by private charter flight direct to the Il N’gwesi airfield, or by road via Ngare Ndare.
