ELEPHANT WATCH SAFARIS, SAMBURU

Location: Situated in the arid North of Kenya, in a land of rugged beauty and untamed wilderness, Elephant Watch Safaris has established its camp on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro river in Samburu National Reserve. Iain and Oria Douglas-Hamilton been associated with elephants for more than thirty years, and have discovered that they are highly intelligent social animals and have a well-organised family structure.

Description: The Elephant Watch Safari concept is a first for Africa.  The exotic Elephant Watch Camp accommodates guests in style while venturing into the secret world of elephants.  Wild elephants have always been one of Africa’s most majestic sights.  Guests have the opportunity to understand and trust elephants and to gain intimate knowledge, beyond mere observation, on 66 families, numbering 1000 elephants in total.

Accommodation & Facilities: The Elephant Watch Safari Camp perched on a sloping riverbank beneath great big Kigelia trees and acacias, is home to some of the largest bulls in Samburu.    The camp is both personal and luxury with only five custom made desert-style tents with en-suite bathrooms, accommodating up to a maximum of ten guests.  Large colourful cushions with Samburu beadwork and local rugs adorn the custom designed furniture made from fallen trees.   Every detail of the camp is designed to blend with the nomadic camp décor.

Hosted by: Guests at the camp are hosted by Jacky and Algy Sloane, and on occasion Oria Douglas-Hamilton. Trained elephant guides escort guests during elephant safaris.

Optional Extras: Visit to the Save the Elephants Research Camp and visits to the local Samburu village.

Closed Season: Closed in April and November during the rains.

Access: By Air Kenya & daily scheduled flight from Wilson, by private charter or by road via Nanyuki town.
