Introduction: Horseback in Kenya offers horse riding safaris on El Karama Ranch, accompanied by a string of pack camels, with camping in a series of beautiful wilderness locations.
Location: El Karama Ranch is a 14,000 acre cattle and wildlife ranch, situated between Mount Kenya and the Great Rift Valley. With 75 identified species of mammal and over 350 species of birds, El Karama is a nature lover’s paradise.
Description: Being based on a working cattle ranch, guests can experience livestock husbandry, while also viewing game from horseback – a unique combination. This stunning ranch offers scenically beautiful rides with many a picnic lunch and sundowner spent on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. The mixed Arab, Somali and thoroughbred horses bred on the ranch, are attractive, intelligent and friendly, with build and stamina suited to bush country.

Accommodation/Facilities: Classic green canvas safari tents (for two people each) are home for the duration of the safari. The tents are assembled in scenic locations, with a central canopy pitched nearby for meals, and evenings are spent around the camp fire. The horses are either picketed to a rope or sleep in nearby ‘bomas’.
Hosted by: Laria Grant, who was brought up on El Karama, takes special responsibly of the cattle and horses, and helps her father manage the ranch – which has been home to the Grant family for almost 40 years. Laria, married to a wildlife photographer, guides the Horseback in Kenya safaris with a support team.
Seasons: Safaris can be booked all year round.
Access: By road from Nanyuki takes approximately an hour.
